HOUSING CHAMP LORAIN HONOURED BY JAGS

Lorain Mackinnon, a long-serving public figure in Maryhill, has been honoured by Partick Thistle Football Club.

The vice chair of Maryhill Housing was named as the Club’s latest ‘Community Champion’ in a ceremony on the pitch at their ground Firhill.

Lorain was chosen by the Club to receive the honour thanks to her long-standing service to the community – particularly in housing.

Lorain has just completed five years as chair of Maryhill Housing and has now taken up the role of vice chair, Scottish Housing News reports.

It is the third time Lorain, who lives locally, has held the role of chair and she has served on the Board of Maryhill Housing for over 20 years, according to SHN's website.

The Community Champion initiative seeks to reward local people and organisations for the good work that they do.

More than 3700 fans saw Lorain receive the award from Partick Thistle managing director Ian Maxwell at the match with visitors Dundee FC.

PUBLIC ATTEND BMX PLANS EVENT

A public consultation event about a proposed BMX centre in Knightswood was held last week.

The proposals are for Scotland's first Olympic standard BMX track with 8m and 5m start ramps for all levels of riders.

According to Glasgow Life: "It is the only new venue being built ahead of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships and will complete the city’s portfolio of cycle sport venues as well as increasing the profile of cycling across the country.

"It’s construction means that young people will be able to learn all four cycling disciplines across the city – mountain biking at Cathkin Braes, road and track at the Velodrome and BMX at Knightswood Park."

The public event hosted by Glasgow Life was held at Knightswood Community Centre, on Alderman Road.

Afterwards, Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust took to Facebook to say: "Just been to @glasgowlife consultation about proposed #knightswood #bmx centre - looks like exciting development for @Glasgow2018"

REFUGEE FUNDRAISER IS A HUGE SUCCESS

A charity night in aid of asylum seekers in Glasgow has raised £716 - with hopefully more to follow.

The Come In Out Of The Cold event took place on Saturday at the Glasgow Night Shelter at Anderston Kelvingrove Parish Church on Argyle Street.

Glasgow residents were invited along for a cup of tea and a chat with people from all backgrounds and nationalities. Live music was also organised.

Organiser Laura McMahon said of the event on Facebook: "Dear all, thanks to your amazing generosity, we made £716.28 last night, in addition to all the donated food and clothing!

"We're going to see if we can bump this up even more and if you would still like to donate in any way, you can find out here or support the Scottish Refugee Council by clicking here or hold your own event."
