Working as a GP has many rewards but one of my greatest joys is looking after children and young people, writes Dr Isabelle Cullen.
In my practice in Hyndland I have been privileged to be able to care for some of my patients from before birth, through childhood and into adulthood.
I have also had the pleasure of looking after up to four generations in several families.
Several of the ‘babies’ I have looked after over the last 30 years are now having their own young families.
This aspect of my working life is very enriching for me but it’s also a vital part of what General Practice is about.
Continuity for patients and families is bound to enhance their care.
Knowledge of an individual’s personal and family history can make a huge difference to their management.
I am really missing face to face contact with all my patients but I particularly miss the children.
When they do attend it can be challenging. It’s not easy winning over a crying baby whilst in full PPE!
Families are often distanced in lockdown and cannot access the usual reassurance from grandparents and other relatives.

Remember GP surgeries remain open despite Covid restrictions and your GP is there to provide to support.
We are aware that ailments continue as normal despite the pandemic. We can consult by phone and video call.
If we need to see you in person it is safe to come to the surgery.
