'We need strong wooden playground shelters to keep dry'

The school’s parent council has launched a fundraiser and is appealing for donations from the community.

Fundraising is under way to keep children dry and warm as teaching turns to more outdoor learning.

Three sturdy wooden shelters are being sought to protect pupils at Hyndland Primary School from the elements.

The school’s parent council has launched a fundraiser and is appealing for donations from the community.

A fundraising page says: “We need strong wooden shelters and fun play/learning kit in our playgrounds.

"Somewhere dry to eat snacks and lunches will be great too!”

The page says: “We learn better if we can stay warm and dry outdoors.

“Glasgow has a lot of rain. It's keeping our dear green place very green, but it's making our outdoor learning, lunch and playtimes wet and miserable.

“We need a lasting fix for outdoors.

“Covid-19 means we are outside more than ever.

“But even before Covid we would get soaking wet while outside learning, playing and eating our packed lunches.

“We need strong wooden playground shelters, so we can keep warm, dry and happy.

“We're fundraising to get shelters and play kit for as many playgrounds at Hyndland Primary as we can afford.”

Outdoor learning had begun before the pandemic but the coronavirus has created a greater need.

The school has even appointed a principle teacher for developing outdoor learning.

If the money is raised, Glasgow Wood Recycling will build the shelters for use by the spring.

The fundraiser has set a target of £4,500. Money is also coming from the school’s Afty Club.

“Glasgow has a lot of rain. It's keeping our dear green place very green, but it's making our outdoor learning, lunch and playtimes wet and miserable.

Hyndland Parent Council

Parent council secretary Dorian Grieve said the pandemic had made the usual fundraising channels difficult.

“it is impossible to run events that would have been the mainstay of fundraising in any normal year.

“Our annual Halloween disco and Burns night ceilidh are normally very well attended.

“In the circumstances, we decided that an online fundraising site would be the best way to go.”
