'As far as gifts go this is the one that keeps on giving'

Notre Dame High School pupil Cecilia Savage tells Heather Suttie about life with her pup Lily

I love living in the West End with my mum Jenny and our eight-month-old Ruby Cavapoo. She was a birthday present from my dad, and as far as gifts go this is the one that keeps on giving. We’re joined at the hip, always out together, except when I go to gigs. I love music so that’s one of my main hobbies.

Lily is quite like me. I think she even looks like me as I used to be ginger before going blonde. She’s such a great dog: clever, loyal, energetic, loads of fun and at the same time super laid back, and I love having her by my side.

It’s a big commitment having a dog to care for but my mum and I love her and we’re lucky to have Mandy our dog walker who Lily loves, so she’s never short of company.

When I’m at school, Lily keeps my mum company. She’s a great guard dog. She’s small but has a big bark on her. She loves babies, children and women. She’s not so hot on men, which is fine. Girl power.

Before I chose her, I did my research and Ruby Cavapoos are a cross of a red poodle with a ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are a popular family dog thanks to their outgoing, playful, and affectionate nature. They are sometimes prone to experiencing separation anxiety if they’re not properly socialised and trained, so we made sure we trained her.

She is the perfect fit for me. We bonded immediately and even though she’s always after my toasties I love her to bits. She’s got a bit of a thing for mature cheddar, so if there’s a cheese toastie on the go she’s right by my side.

She’s the perfect dog really. Lily’s very well behaved and because she’s so cute and small she can’t jump up on the furniture. That said, mum does let her on her bed sometimes.

I love her company and she’s a very sociable wee dog with lots of friends in the neighbourhood. There’s Peggy and Cyrus and Roxy and lots of our neighbours have dogs so she’s never short of four-legged friends to run about with.

I'd highly recommend a Cavapoo. They don’t require long walks and they don’t shed much so they’re a good choice if you suffer from an allergy. They don’t take much time to groom. We brush Lily every week to make sure she’s feeling her best.

My mum and I love taking her for short walks round the area. We’re lucky to have so many green spaces nearby: Victoria Park, Thornwood Park, Naseby Park and the Botanic Gardens.

Lily keeps me fit and I also love to do pilates and go to gigs with my friends. I’m looking for a part-time job at the moment. Dog walking might be good but I don’t want to take away from Mandy’s business. Working in a dog-friendly café, salon or boutique would be ideal.
