Glasgow University lifts Glasgow Taxis Cup

The team edged out city rivals Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian

Glasgow University have been crowned winners of Scotland’s largest student varsity sporting competition.

The team edged out city rivals Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian to claim the Glasgow Taxis Cup.

The competition saw over 800 students participating across 21 different sporting disciplines including athletics, badminton, hockey and netball in a day of intense competition before coming to a conclusion at Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Points were allocated to the winner of individual sporting events in order to decide the victorious university.

“Thank you all our staff and volunteers who helped organise Taxis Cup and all those who came along to support our students.

“Sports across the city is getting bigger and better each year and it’s always wonderful to see so many of our student get involved.

“So incredibly proud to say that we can return the cup back to where it belongs – Glasgow.”

Glasgow Taxis is proud to continue to support this fantastic annual event which not only celebrates emerging sporting talent but also champions the contribution the University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University make to the city.

Ronan Welch, vice president, Sport and Wellbeing, Strathclyde University Sports Union, said: “These competitions always come close to the wire and I’m devastated it didn’t go our way today.

“Congratulations to GU on their win today it was well deserved.

“The Glasgow Taxis Cup is always a highlight in the student sport calendar and this year was no exception that’s for sure. Massive thanks to the organisers, volunteers, fans and participants for making the event as special as ever.

“Training for next year’s cup starts tomorrow and best believe we’re coming back for the win next year.”

The event, now in its 20th year, has been supported by Glasgow Taxis Ltd since 2011.
