'Tidy Weegie' message invites all to keep West End litter free

People in the West End are being encouraged to get out and pick up litter - and use the bins.

People in the West End are being encouraged to get out and pick up litter as part of a new campaign.

The group behind the Visit West End marketing drive has teamed up with volunteers at the Glasgow Cleanup.

Together they are taking part in the Glasgow Summer Clean this Saturday (June 19).

But they ask that shoppers, residents and visitors make a longer-term commitment to keeping the place tidy.

It comes as banners appear around the West End encouraging people to pick up and keep the streets and pavements free of litter.

The colourful hoardings ask us all to ‘Be a Tidy Weegie’.

'Bin it or take it home', is the message.

The campaign is being supported via the Visit West End social media channels, and is asking people to use the hashtag #visitwestend.

The team is also running a social media competition to reward the cleanest and greenest West Enders with a £30 Visit West End Gift Card.

To enter, get involved with the Glasgow Summer Clean and tag @visitwestend in photos of your good work or email info@visitwestend.com.

The Visit West End campaign is run by the Byres Road and Lanes Business Improvement District (BID) team.

Group chair John Turner said: “The West End is the jewel in Glasgow's crown, with its wide range of shops, eateries, quirky lanes and the wonderful Kelvingrove Park and Botanic Gardens.

“So we want to encourage everyone, whether a local resident, business owner or employee, or just a visitor, to really take pride in keeping the area looking beautiful.”

Visit West End will also be planning a community clean up as part of the campaign.

More information on this will be found on the campaign’s webpage - https://www.visitwestend.com/green-initiative/

Meanwhile, the team has secured funding via the Scottish Government’s  Scotland Loves Local Fund to supply businesses in the stretch of Byres Road between University Avenue and Dumbarton Road with floral hanging baskets.

The baskets are be installed this month to bring a lively splash of colour to the area.

John said: “We have been through enough over the last year or so.

“Let's all be tidy Weegies and make Glasgow really glitter."
