Video: Yorkhill & Finnieston family gala will showcase plans to restore local parks

Gala event will help launch plans for three local parks as well as raising money for local improvements.

A new charity is set to breathe fresh life into three neglected parks in the West End of Glasgow.

Yorkhill Green Spaces hopes to rejuvenate Overnewton Square, Yorkhill Park, and Kelvinhaugh Street Park.

And the area's community council, which is behind the drive, has organised a gala day this coming weekend [September 11] to kickstart fundraising and awareness of the project.

Watch: Community council secretary Lee Grant explains plans for the parks.

Family events, music, displays and crafts will entertain people on the day, but the community council also hopes to gauge what local people want from the three green spaces.

Lee Grant, secretary of Yorkhill & Kelvingrove Community Council, explained the background to the new charity.

He told Glasgow West End Today: "The community council has launched a new initiative to raise a new charity called Yorkhill Green Spaces.

"It is our intention to turn these three parks from what are effectively wastelands at the minute and bring them back to life with new equipment, new plants, trees, and fencing to secure the area for the younger residents.

Poster: The Gala takes place this weekend at Overnewton Square.

"We also want to make calm tranquil spaces that older residents can sit in and enjoy.

"To do this we are running a gala day on September 11 from 11am to 6pm in Overnewton Square, which lies just behind Old Dumbarton Road and Firebird on Argyle Street."

Lee says the community council has got a number of local businesses involved, including Dukes Bar and Grunting Growler which are doing a selection of beers and wine.

"Dukes Bar is making a pallet bar as a creation for the day," said Lee.

Neglected: Overnewton Square is badly in need of investment.

"We also have live music within a marquee at the top end of the park.

"Further down we've got a craft fair taking place inside the Overnewton Recreation Centre.

"In addition to that we have got a lady offering craft workshops for those who are interested in learning how to make jewellery."

There will be a BMX display team, among a number of events for children including yoga for kids, and Play on Pedals.

Velvet Moon, the gift shop on Argyle Street, will be bringing a gazebo and will be selling their end of line stock at £10 or under.

Investment: New play equipment and fencing are part of the plans for Overnewton Square.

Lee said: "And of course we have got a raffle that will help raise funds to restore these parks.

"And a number of local businesses have got involved and kindly donated prizes, including the SSE Hydro which has gifted three sets of four tickets to the Best Christmas Ever.

"We have meal vouchers from the Gannet, from the Islay Inn, and Well Groomed West End Glasgow pet grooming service which on the day will also be offering dog grooming displays and free treats for your dog."

Lee added: "Looking to the future we have a park that is in need of some attention. We'd like to see more trees planted. And in the three parks there may be an opportunity to plant an orchard.

"We'd also like to investigate the ability for a community garden for those residents who wanted to take part in growing plants and flowers.

Hidden: Yorkhill Park is tucked between railway lines and housing.

"We'd like to see more wildlife being brought back into the parks for the younger residents to experience, so we will be looking at what planting measures we can do whether that is wild planting or formal planting.

"So on the day, the most important part is to get feedback from people who live here to see what they want from their

green spaces.

"We will have an area mocked up to show what the park could look like after restoration.

"But from our point of view we would like you to get involved with the Yorkhill & Kelvingrove Community Council and volunteer to make our parks bloom."
