Denise and Michael back at Byres Road Book Festival

Denise Mina and Michael Pedersen return to the event

Authors Denise Mina and Michael Pedersen will make their second appearances at the Byres Road Book Festival next month.

Denise will be in conversation with Louise Welsh and Michael will be joined by Damian Barr.

Jenny Colgan, a firm favourite from the Byres Road Book Festival 2022, will be opening this year’s festival with her much-loved literary style.

The popular West End literary festival will return over the September weekend (September 26-29) with a host of events that organisers hope will engage and entertain all ages and interests.

On the subject of style, TV judge and presenter Banjo Beale will be discussing all things interior design with architect and author Laura Jane Clark.

Many styles of poetry are on offer at various locations over the weekend, including Len Pennie, Ross Wilcock at the Curlers Rest and two sessions of spoken word at Òran Mór.

The book festival is produced by the Byres Road Business Improvement District (Visit West End) in partnership with Glasgow Life, the Gaelic Books Council, Waterstones, the Oxfam Bookshop and the Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel, and supported by JACK ARTS Scotland.

The festival is proud of its Gaelic strand and this year’s programme brings together Niall O’Gallagher and Rody Gorman, two Crowned Bards of An Comunn Gàidhealach. Gillebride MacMillan will be sharing his translation of Paddington, and there may be more bears on offer at this event for the young at heart.

For younger audiences, seven events for children at this year’s festival include storytelling with Macastory, an activity-based session with Alison Murray and an engaging discussion with award-winning author Juliette Forrest.

Glasgow is renowned worldwide for its storytelling, poetry and music, with the West End being an important literary hub for the city, so it is fitting that the Byres Road Book Festival is becoming one of the leading events in the city's cultural calendar - John Turner

The Oxfam Bookshop is hosting a broad range of events with authors including Joy Dakers, Graham Murdoch, Avril Duncan and Steve Logan.

Denise Mina said: “This festival is so close to my house I could almost get there without standing up.

“Byres Road is central to my imagined world and it’s a delight to be appearing at the Festival with so many brilliant writers.”

Michael Pedersen said: “I'm chuffed to the cherries and peaches to be back within the fold of the Byres Road Book Festival.

“It's such a stunning slice of literary lustre in the west end of Glasgow.

“To be championing, hosting, and word churner with the incredible, indefatigable Damian Barr is a thrill of the utmost pleasure, especially after the year he's had with Maggie & Me. A deep dive of the most vital variety awaits.”

John Turner, Chair of the Byres Road Improvement District, said: "Glasgow is renowned worldwide for its storytelling, poetry and music, with the West End being an important literary hub for the city, so it is fitting that the Byres Road Book Festival is becoming one of the leading events in the city's cultural calendar.”

"The Byres Road & Lanes BID is therefore delighted once again to invite book and poetry lovers of all ages to this year's events, with something to suit all tastes during the four days of the Festival.

"I am especially intrigued by the idea of a Gaelic Paddington."
