From Knightswood to The Theatre Royal, watch Scotland's top young dancers live

This year the performances are themed on 'space' with pieces based on night skies, the moon, the Northern lights.

It is Scotland's only centre for dance excellence - whose students come from all over the country to learn their discipline.

But with just weeks to go before the summer break, The Dance School of Scotland is preparing for its end-of-term Annual Showcase at The Theatre Royal in Glasgow.

The performances are a platform for "the stars of tomorrow to shine today", according to the school.

Over the years young dancers have gone on to perform professionally with the UK's biggest companies.

But the beauty of The Dance School of Scotland is that it's based within a city comprehensive school - Knightswood Secondary.

Readers can take advantage of a special promotional offer to see the students perform (see below).

We caught up with the students this week with rehearsals for the shows in full swing.

This year the performances are themed on 'space' with pieces based on night skies, the moon, the Northern lights.

It promises to be literally ‘out of this world’.

The showcase is taking place in The Theatre Royal, Glasgow on June 15 and 16.

The programme includes an inspiring mix of ballet, modern, jazz and contemporary pieces.

Tickets cost from £10.00 and can be bought from the ATG Theatres website www.atgtickets.com or at the Theatre Royal box office.

The school's stage manager is Jo Di Lieto.

She said: "The dance school has been here for over 30 years.

"We have students that come from all over Scotland - and they go on to great things.

"We've got dancers who are at Scottish Ballet, at the Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet.

"They are in West End musicals - and generally performing all over the world."

She said: "The production is based on the theme of space, and that has been the brief to all the choreographers.

"Some are doing pieces based on constellations, some are doing astronomical events like the Aurora Borealis.

"Others have taken the theme of aliens, and that's quite a fun one.

"There will be a real mixture of different types of pieces.

"We've got ballet pieces. We've got contemporary, modern, jazz - a bit of something for everyone really."

The Dance School of Scotland is the country’s only fully funded centre of excellence for vocational dance.

The school is funded by the Scottish Government and tuition is free for all who attend.

The students at the Dance School not only receive free specialist tuition from dance professionals in 'state of the art' facilities, but also take part in the mainstream curriculum of the Secondary school.

"We are a centre of excellence for Scotland - the only one in the whole of Scotland.

"We would say that the standard is excellent.

"It's a chance to see the stars of tomorrow, today."
