'I drew Bonnie doing a BMX trick because I live close to new track in Knightswood'

Students were asked to draw Bonnie the Seal - the fun mascot for the games.

A Knightswood schoolgirl has scooped a national drawing prize celebrating the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.

And Rachel Morrison, 13, said she was inspired by one of the legacy projects for the games - a new world-class BMX centre under construction near her home.

Students were asked to draw Bonnie the Seal - the fun mascot for the games.

So Rachel drew Bonnie showing off her excellent BMX skills.

The image was chosen the best from a whopping 600 entries from across Scotland.

Rachel’s winning entry has been rewarded with four tickets to the Glasgow 2018 European Junior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (Final) on Friday 3 August and a Bonnie cuddly toy.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE

Rachel’s artwork will be also be displayed to thousands of people on a busy Glasgow Clydeside expressway billboard.

Rachel said: “I chose to draw Bonnie doing a BMX trick because I live very close to the BMX track being built at Knightswood and will be going to watch the BMX racing there this August.

"I also drew the audience to make it look like Bonnie is at the Championships competing.”

The championships will take place around Scotland from 2 to 12 August.

The sports featuring include aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon.

Colin Hartley is the director of the Glasgow 2018 Championships.

He said: “We were delighted by the sheer number of Bonnie entries from right across Scotland as children and adults alike got behind the competition fronted by our much-loved mascot.

“As excitement for Glasgow 2018 continues to grow, Bonnie’s playful character continues to inspire and encourage children to learn new sports.

"Families can look forward to a whole host of sporting action across Glasgow and Scotland this summer.”

Bonnie will be travelling around Scotland meeting children and sports fans between now and the Championships.
