Carol scoops 'best teacher' award after 46-year career

The winner was pictured with her prize at Glasgow’s former teaching college in Jordanhill which marks its centenary year.

A teacher who retires this week after 46 years at the same Glasgow school has been named the city’s best in a competition.

Carol Rafferty from All Saints RC Secondary in Glasgow was announced as the winner of Glasgow's Best Teacher 2021.

Carol is Principal Teacher of Pupil Support and teaches PE at the secondary school in Barmulloch.

She was pictured with her prize outside the David Stow building in Jordanhill - Glasgow’s former teaching college which marks its centenary year.

The competition was run by home builder Cala Homes (West) which is developing the former college campus in the West End of the city.

The primary school winner was Naomi Clemence of Drummore Primary School and runners up were Mr Peck from Lourdes Secondary School and Miss Doherty from St Monica’s Primary School.

Hundreds of nominations were received from around the city after the competition was launched in the spring.

Carol said: “It is lovely to be successfully nominated for this award and I feel everyone in All Saints should share this with me.

“I have loved working and supporting the young people in All Saints learning community. It has been a real privilege.

“Our young people deserve the very best and I hope that over my 46 years of service in All Saints I have met those expectations.”

Naomi, said: “It’s been a hard year for everyone, but I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team at Drummore where everyone does their best to make a difference to all of our lovely children.

“I believe that if staff and families work closely together, children will have better outcomes.

“I’m very honoured to have been nominated by Paula but I wish there was an award for best families – our wonderful families have coped with a lot throughout the pandemic and I feel they also deserve recognition.”

Carol received £1,000 and £500 for her school and Naomi received £500 and £250 for her school.

The runners up both received £250 and a further £250 for their schools.

Liana Canavan, sales and marketing director for CALA Homes (West) said, “The David Stow building is iconic in Glasgow’s history and many people in and around the city have strong links to it as the main teacher training college.

“As we mark 100 years since it first opened its doors, we feel it is fitting to respect its heritage by recognising the hard work and commitment of teachers in Glasgow today.

“The city’s teachers have had an incredibly challenging time over the last 18 months in keeping students engaged, supporting them during home schooling and making the return to school as seamless and stress-free as possible.

“From reading the entries, Glasgow can be proud that so many of our teachers have gone above and beyond to support their pupils and make a concerted effort to ensure their education experience continues.

“Mrs Rafferty was a deserving winner, and we wish her all the best in her pending retirement.

“Our Primary winner and runners up deserve a special mention too, they have obviously had a profound effect on colleagues, pupils and parents and it is great to help them show their appreciation in this way.”

Cala Homes’ Jordanhill Park development includes the refurbishment of the David Stow building, and a range of new apartments, townhouses and detached homes.
