'Only weeks left before Dali masterpiece departs Kelvingrove art gallery for a year'

With schools now breaking up for the summer holidays, Glasgow Museums is urging people to visit art gallery to see Christ of St John of the Cross.

Glasgow Museums have launched their summer programme of events - with a starring role for one painting that's soon to leave the city.

Salvador Dali's iconic Christ of St John of the Cross is a highlight of any trip to Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.

But the masterpiece will be departing temporarily in early August to join other works at a major exhibition in London, which then moves to Florida.

With schools now breaking up for the summer holidays, Glasgow Museums is urging people to visit Kelvingrove to see one of Scotland’s favourite paintings.

Pippa Stephenson is curator of European art at Glasgow Museums.

She said: “This iconic painting is a highlight for many of the people who visit Kelvingrove every year and we’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of extra visitors to the museum during the school holidays.

"We are also excited to give many more people the opportunity to see this masterpiece in person, when it goes on show alongside works by Duchamp at the Royal Academy’s forthcoming exhibition.

"Everyone agrees Christ of St John of the Cross will be one of the undoubted highlights of the Dali/Duchamp exhibition, opening in September."

The iconic artwork will remain on show at Kelvingrove Museum for most of the school summer holiday period before traveling to the Royal Academy of Arts in London in September 2017.

STAR ATTRACTION

Here it will be one of the star attractions of Dalí/Duchamp, opening on October 7.

The exhibition will then travel to The Dalí Museum in St Petersburg, Florida from February to May 2018.

One of the Royal Academy’s most popular and moving paintings, Henry Raeburn’s Boy and Rabbit, will go on show at Kelvingrove Museum as part of a reciprocal loan agreement.

Christ of St John of the Cross will return to Kelvingrove Museum in summer 2018.

Pippa said: “Glasgow is very fortunate to hold one of the finest art collections in Europe.

"By loaning key pieces, which are then often presented in new ways, we hope to learn more about the artwork in our care."

Glasgow Museums is launching a packed programme of free, fun, family events across all nine museums this summer.

Families can enjoy a full programme of workshops, activities and craft sessions at Kelvingrove and across the city’s other museums.

Many of the events on the Summer Family Events programme are free.
