Outdoor activities to resume as Scotland begins cautious journey out of lockdown

Nicola Sturgeon said cases of coronavirus had reduced enough to begin easing restriction around outdoor activity from Friday.

Nicola Sturgeon has announced Scotland’s first steps out of lockdown.

She said cases of coronavirus had reduced enough to begin easing restriction around outdoor activity from Friday.

But she warned “lockdown is being modified slightly - it is not over”.

In Scotland, 37 people remain in intensive care with Covid-19 among the 15,288 confirmed positive cases.

In the last 24-hour period, there have been 12 confirmed deaths from the disease, taking the total to 2,316.

From Friday May 29:

* People can meet up at any one time with people from one other household outside and at a safe distance

* People can sit or sunbathe in parks and open areas - if they abide by the above

* Golf, tennis, bowls and fishing can resume with social distancing

* You can travel – preferably by walking or cycling - to a location nearby for recreation

* Construction industry will be able to restart site preparation

* Garden centres and plant nurseries can reopen some of their services

* Drive-through food outlets can re-open

From Monday June 1:

* Household waste recycling centres can re-open from Monday

* Teachers and other staff can enter schools to prepare for re-opening on 11 August

From Wednesday June 3:

* Childcare will be available to a larger number of children who most need it

* Childminding services and fully outdoor nursery provision will start to reopen

In Glasgow, sports clubs have said they intend to open from Friday.

Western tennis club in Hyndland will be resuming play under strict social distancing guidelines.

The club tweeted: "We are delighted to be able to play tennis but we MUST stick to the rules."

'Play only'

Hyndland Bowling Club said members were being given information about the "opening of the green for play only" - suggesting the clubhouse will remain closed.

In Partick, the West End Garden Centre is due to reopen its doors to walk-in customers.

People attending the centre on Peel Street were being told to expect queues.

Meanwhile, non-essential shops will remain closed and only cafes and shops providing a takeaway service will open.

Speaking on Thursday, the First Minister said it was still strongly recommended that people stay at home when they could.

She said: “Still stay at home as much as possible – the virus has not gone away. Lockdown is being modified slightly - it is not over.

“Make sure you are still seeing far fewer people than you might normally do.

'Really difficult'

“Don’t meet up with more than one other household at a time, don’t meet more than one a day and keep to a maximum of eight people in a group.

“Stay two metres apart when you do meet. And that, I know will be really difficult – perhaps the most difficult part of all.

"The instinct to hug somebody you love is a really strong one – especially when you haven’t seen that person for quite some time."
