University of Glasgow medics appeal gives old laptops new home in Rwanda

Healthcare students in Africa benefitting from appeal launched by counterparts in Glasgow.

Medics at the University of Glasgow are helping their counterparts in Rwanda this Christmas by sending out unwanted laptops.

Glasgow ARM (Advancement for Rwandan Medics) is a joint student-staff charity formed to support the work of UofG’s Professor Phil Cotton, recently appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rwanda.

The laptop appeal is one of a number of initiatives.

ARM's Fergus Taylor, writing for the university's Campus e-News feed said: "Thanks to generous donations by staff and students, we have already sent out nearly 50 laptops.

"Students with disabilities and with no family support have especially benefitted."

One of the recipients of the appeal is Aline, a Rwanda student.

According to Campus e-News, Aline is disabled and relies on a wheelchair and her friend Leonie for help.

The articles says: "She can't access the computer lab or library because she can't manoeuvre her wheelchair over the rough terrain at Kibuye Campus.

"Aline is one of the students who were selected to receive a laptop from the ones you sent last time.

"This has had a profound effect on her access to learning materials and engagement with her course."

Fergus Taylor, ARM:

"Thanks to generous donations by staff and students, we have already sent out nearly 50 laptops.

"Students with disabilities and with no family support have especially benefitted."

Students are invited to hand over laptops at one of three locations: Wolfson Medical School Building reception desk; McIntyre Building Welcome Desk; and University Library Reception.

ARMs says university IT colleagues will securely wipe and re-format the hard drive.

Donors are asked to check that laptops do not have "hardware problems, a broken screen, poor power connections or any other disabling problem".
