Vinicombe Street revamp set to give West End a new public space

Makeover for city street part of plans to breathe new life into key retail and leisure district

A new public space taking shape off Byres Road could host future events such as cultural celebrations, vintage car rallies and mini concerts, according to the area's business advocacy group.

Work has been progressing for several weeks on the overhaul of Vinicombe Street at its western junction with Byres Road.

New granite blocks and street furniture are transforming the thoroughfare which leads on to the northern end of the West End's principal retail and leisure district.

The opening is several weeks away, but already plans are being considered for its use in months to come.

David Howat, is chair of the Byres Road & Lanes Business Improvement District, which is one of the partner organisations, including Glasgow City Council and Friends of Glasgow West, working to improve the experience for visitors and businesses in the area under the umbrella of the Byres Road Improvement Group.

David said: "Vinicombe Street is important to us because we want to use this area, make it work for the community and make it work for the businesses to host events and other things, to really help promote Byres Road as destination for tourists and other people in Glasgow."

He added: "We are hoping tie in with the Mela that goes on in Kelvingrove Park, and maybe have a mini Mela here. And it would be nice to have, maybe, a classic car rally. Maybe theatrical performances, music performances, anything you could really do in an outdoor space that would bring people here."

He said: "Vinicombe Street is a very important part of our Business Improvement District area. And one of the reasons for that is that it has two A-listed buildings, which are real jewels in the crown of the architecture in the West End.

"So it was very important I think to carry out comprehensive improvements to the public realm of Vinicombe Street."

The Byres Road Improvement Group also have plans to carry out a similar make over to Chancellor Street at the southern end of Byres Road, and there are also discussions taking place over what can be done to improve the look and use and Ashton Road car park, situated at the prominent corner of Byres Road and University Avenue.
