Skypark draws on SWG3 for inspiration

Visitors can experience augmented reality installations

Street art and augmented reality have come together at a huge vacant development site in Finnieston.

Skypark and arts venue SWG3 are collaborating at a colourful pop-up venue that is open to the public this month.

Park XR is taking place at the empty site between Finnieston Street and Exhibition Centre train station - formerly the Amec engineering works and now designated as Skypark 7.

Led by Yardworks, SWG3’s globally renowned street arts and graffiti programme, the new project blends street art and contemporary art within a unique 43,000 sq ft playground, using shipping containers painted at this year’s Yardworks Festival as large scale canvasses for new artwork and light installations.

Over each weekend in June, a programme of free workshops and activities is taking place, with opportunities to learn more about street art, graffiti and digital art led by artists along with informative tours of the artworks.

This weekend (June 21-23) is Virtual Reality weekend when the site will be activated with extended reality layers, using the most cutting edge technology that allows visitors with an iphone or smart phone to engage in an immersive digital experience.

Meanwhile, local schoolchildren have been enjoying tours of the artworks as part of an education programme launched by Skypark and SWG3.

Gary McKay, Yardworks Studio Director, said: “Our opening weekend was brilliant, despite the good Scottish weather.

Skypark understands the importance of communities pulling together and how art can give opportunity to develop young minds and this event will make kids' creativity shine in the City again. - Angela Higgins

"Artist’s painting against the iconic backdrop of Glasgow’s riverside was quite magical. We’re really looking forward to welcoming more people to the site over the next couple of weeks and showing off not only street and graffiti arts but digital arts too.

“We’re open 11-6 over the weekends and will be open for schools and communities through the week - just get in touch to book a slot.”

Angela Higgins of Resonance Capital Skypark’s Strategic Lettings Advisor, said: “Banksy chose Glasgow last year for his first ever show, because of the defiant art already in the City, which elevated the interest in street art and brought everyone together.

"PARK XR in collaboration with Yardworks, SWG3 and Skypark will build on this, using art to unite communities and inspire and encourage young people to express themselves through experiencing Glasgow University’s cutting edge XR facilities.
