Artists join forces to help raise £100,000 for Partick mum-of-three battling cancer

Claire Bothwell, 40, who is married with three young children, has been diagnosed with two types of cancer.

Scotland's leading artists have donated works for an auction in aid of Partick mum Claire Bothwell.

Claire, 40, who is married with three young children, has been diagnosed with two types of cancer.

Friends and family have embarked on a mammoth fundraising campaign to raise £100,000.

Later this month the biggest event so far will see dozens of pieces of art go under the hammer at a special auction at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA).

Three of the artists - Rachel Maclean, John Byrne and Jack Vettriano - were part of a BBC film on Billy Connolly that was produced and directed by Claire's husband Liam McArdle.

Maclean donated a print of Sir Billy created for the murals programme.

Vettriano donated a print that was part of an exclusive limited run - the original is owned by Jack Nicholson and is now sold out.

The third documentary contributor, much-loved Scottish artist John Byrne, donated a limited edition print by John Bellany from his own collection.

Friend Suzy Houston said: "We have been overwhelmed by the support of Scotland’s finest artists and we have some truly amazing works up for purchase.

"Glasgow is a city famed for its contemporary art scene and we have been lucky enough to have work donated by a wide selection of artists such as Rachel Adams, Sarah Ruck Alfast, Jackie Anderson, Jenny Anderson and Ciara Philips with many, many more.

"So whether it’s a last-minute Christmas present you are looking to add to your own art collection or you are looking to make an investment purchase there is something for everyone here."

Claire was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer last year after waiting six months to be tested for the disease.

Following surgery to remove the tumour, doctors found the disease had spread to her lungs.

A second blow came this year when doctors discovered she had another, entirely unrelated, blood cancer called follicular lymphoma.

Treatment options

Claire was told her second cancer diagnosis meant she doesn’t qualify for NHS clinical trials.

The hope is now that the £100,000 being raised will let her explore treatment options elsewhere in the world.

Street sweeps, dances and local fundraising and donations have so far help raise £40,000.

Other events are planned over the coming weeks and months.

All the auction works will be available to view in advance online www.cureclairescancer.org/art-auction-listings

Advance bids can be placed via cureclairescancer@gmail.com with works on view at the Intermedia Gallery in the CCA from 11am on December 18.

The auctioneer for the evening is Lala Manning, daughter of Scottish antiques expert and television personality, Anita Manning.
