Restaurant is lined up for what used to be Gillespie's butchers shop in Anniesland

Property consultants say they have tried to find other retailers to move in but to no avail.

A former butchers shop on Great Western Road looks like it may have a new future as a restaurant.

Plans have been submitted for a change of use from retail to class 3 food and drink at 1601 Great Western Road.

The property used to be Andrew Gillespie's butchers shop until the business closed in 2014.

Property consultants say they have tried to find other retailers to move in but to no avail.

Now Ewan Mackay say they have a number of restaurant operators interested in potentially moving in.

Names looking at the premises include Smoak, Ameretto, Sarti, Rusk & Rusk, Villa Toscani, and Panevino.

A note to the city's planning committee explains the efforts the marketing company has gone to to offer the lease elsewhere.

"Unfortunately, despite our extensive marketing campaign and various incentive packages … we have been unsuccessful in generating any meaningful interest in the property on the basis of a new lease.

"In short we have exhausted every enquiry we have for this unit and diligently to encourage both national and local retailers to take this space," say firm Ewan Mackay.

"We have several restaurant operators who are interested in acquiring this space and represent the only firm interest we have received for occupying the premises.

NOT SUITABLE

"They would be able to take a long-term lease, offer a quality fit out and enhance this location on Great Western Road."

Planners have been told that the premises is not suitable for retail because of its location and its "recessed frontage".

Gillespie's butchers shop had been trading on Great Western Road for more than a century.

It closed with very little notice in 2014 marking another departure from a once bustling road.

That part of Great Western Road is now home to a number of bookies shops and newsagents among a few other businesses.
