87-year-old Knightswood man fleeced of his life savings by bogus 'gutter' conman

Police appeal for information about a man driving a white panel van with possibly a 65-plate.

An 87-year-old Knightswood man has been robbed of more than £4,000 by a bogus workman.

The victim was cold-called on May 6 by a man who said he could fix the elderly occupant's roof guttering.

The conman soon escalated the cost after claiming more work was needed.

Devastated: The victim has been deeply affected by this crime.

According to Police Scotland, the vulnerable householder was then persuaded to hand over £4,650.

The con took place at a house in Cloberhill Road, in the High Knightswood area.

A police spokesman said: "This was a particularly callous crime that has left this poor gentleman devastated.

"We are basically talking about someone coming along and taking this man's life savings.

"We would ask everyone to be vigilant and to watch out for their elderly neighbours."

The bogus workman was 5ft 9ins in height with black hair and wearing a blue jacket.

He was driving a white panel van with what the victim thought was a 65-plate.

The vehicle had blue lettering on its side and a ladder attached to its roof.

Police Scotland say never agree to pay for goods or give money to strangers who arrive at your door.

They tell people not to keep large amounts of cash in their houses.

And if you're ever unsure about a caller, don't answer the door.

Anyone with information about this crime can contact Drumchapel by calling 101.
