Eco-friendly cargo bike service is "safe and secure"

Free trial is open to Glasgow businesses who want to be green

An eco-friendly cargo delivery company is reaching out to businesses in the West End.

Velo-City is offering a free trial to anyone who is interested in working with the service - and the trial is on Clean Air Day on June 16.

The Glasgow-based company was set up by Andrew Taylor last year.

He said: “I set up the business in 2021 eager to demonstrate how safe, secure, sustainable and satisfying it is for businesses to take advantage of e-cargo bike deliveries.”

'Specialised'

With a load capacity of 100kg and a specialised aluminium trailer, Andrew delivers a wide range of goods including bottles, barrels, medicines, marketing materials, artworks, and antiques.

By choosing Velo-City cargo bike delivery, he says businesses are choosing “less traffic and cleaner air, giving your customers a positive choice and a guilt-free experience”.

Eco delivery is a growing trend. Barclays said recently nine out of ten (91%) British retailers are planning to invest in eco delivery.

John Bynorth of Environmental Protection Scotland is co-ordinating Clean Air Day in Scotland.

He said: “Cargo bikes are now commonplace in Scotland’s towns and cities.

“Seeing so many of them back on our streets is a sure sign of a green economic recovery.

“They are air pollution busters, delivering goods and services and, at the same time, helping improve air quality for pedestrians and cyclists.”

He said: “With so many deliveries being made every single minute across Scotland, the cargo bike sector has an important part to play in improving air quality and helping businesses achieve net-zero climate change targets.”

On Thursday June 16, Velo-City is offering 10 businesses in Glasgow a free trial with delivery within a three-mile radius of the city centre for a load of up to 100kg, the equivalent of 85 bottles of wine or a giant Panda bear.

“I’m hoping lots of businesses in my home city of Glasgow will take me up on this offer and sample first-hand how efficient and cost effective my delivery service is.

“They’ll also be joining a network working to make things better for their customers and the planet.

'Positive difference'

“I always wanted to do something that made a positive difference, involved my love of cycling and to have a more active role in my eight-year-old son’s life.

“Starting Velo-City ticked every box. The time was right, and I wish I’d done it sooner.”
