Moves are under way to establish a new multi-use community centre for Jordanhill.

Residents ultimately failed to curtail Cala Homes' plans for the former Jordanhill College campus.

But the need for a new community hub became apparent during the campaign.

Now a community trust is being formed to take the plans forward.

Jim Osborne is acting chair of the steering group behind the trust.

“We will work closely with Jordanhill Community Council on the way-forward, and avoid focus on past misdemeanours.

“While ultimately unsuccessful in reducing the residential density of the Campus development, our campaign has had several positive outcomes.

“In particular it has motivated residents and local stakeholders to question environmental issues raised by a major and complex planning application by bringing people of all ages together as never before.

“Crucially the campaign identified the lack of community facilities and transparency in the planning system in Glasgow."

'Truly exciting opportunities'

The Jordanhill Community Trust will work to develop a community plan and business case with local partners.

These include Jordanhill School Educational Amenities Trust, Jordanhill Out of School Service Ltd, The Glasgow Family, Glasgow Health & Social Care Partnership (North West Locality), Statutory Agencies, Organisations and Voluntary Groups.

The new trust will also seek to transfer management of the sports pitches at the former college campus to the community.

The pitches were key elements of alternative proposals presented by the community last year in response to the campus redevelopment.

Jim said: “The formation of Jordanhill Community Trust, which will have charitable status, will enable residents to be involved in the way in which their community is developed and serviced in the future.

“A robust business case will be developed around the use of a community centre by anchor tenants whose purpose is to deliver out of school care, nursery and early learning services along with other facilities to meet a range of community needs.

“There is much work to be done but we believe there are truly exciting opportunities for Jordanhill."
