Next arrival at Kelvindale Station … will be a nature garden thanks to £3,410 grant

Keep Scotland Beautiful makes award to West End station to help transform land into a haven for wildlife.

Kelvindale Railway Station in the West End is in line for a horticultural makeover that will attract wildlife.

The boost has come from a ScotRail Alliance fund designed to support and encourage biodiversity projects at Scotland's stations.

An award of £3,410 will be spent on renovating an empty piece of land at the station.

A bed of trees, flowers and bulbs will be planted along with a display of sunflowers beside a Van Gogh art exhibition nearby.

The funding was provided as part of the ScotRail Biodiversity Fund which is supported by environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Helen Ntabeni, Chair of Friends of Kelvindale Railway Station, said the money was very welcome.

She said: “We’ll be able to really expand on increasing biodiversity in the Station with lots of wildflowers and indigenous shrubs.

"We’ll create a really wonderful space to encourage and support our dwindling butterfly population in Glasgow.

"We’ll not just be planting though, we’ll be educating and encouraging others to re-create our butterfly paradise, so your support will spill over out into the whole community, and we’ll see if we get to record higher butterfly sightings this year because of it.”

Elaine Bell, ScotRail Alliance’s head of CSR, added: “We are extremely proud of all the hard work that our staff and local communities put in every day to make our stations not only beautiful for those boarding or leaving a train, but an environmentally friendly and visually appealing hub for use by local communities."

Ingrid Roughead, Community Projects Officer with Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We are delighted to support ScotRail and the Adopt-a-Station volunteers in improving the local environment in and around their communities, and want to congratulate the volunteers in Kelvindale on their success.

“We hope that this new funding will help them on their way to meeting their environmental aspirations.

“We look forward to continuing our work with ScotRail to help make Scotland cleaner, greener and more sustainable.”

Volunteers can help by taking part in gardening and other activities so that everyone can enjoy the gardens at stations.
