Glasgow institution Rio Cafe announces 'end of an era' as new owners take over

Farewell party is planned for this Saturday ahead of Rio Cafes last day of trading in its current form on April 1.

The West End bar-diner and music venue Rio Cafe has taken to Facebook to announce it is to cease in its current form.

An announcement by the bar's events manager Paul Ross says it is with a "heavy heart" that "Rio as we know it will cease to be at the end of March".

A farewell party at the institution on Hyndland Street is planned for this Saturday - the day the venue was celebrating its 11th birthday party.

Paul said on Rio Cafe's Facebook page:

"We wish the new owners all the very best with their chosen path.

"This Saturday will combine our 11th birthday with a farewell party (final day trading as Rio is 1st April)."

The statement says: "It's been an incredible 11 years, I really have no idea where to begin!

"The quirky little welcoming bar that did things a little differently.

"From it's 1950s Italian kitsch diner aesthetic to it's soul/jazz/funk /rock 'n' roll music policy, it really has been a place for everyone!

"I honestly don't think there is anywhere else in the West End where such a diverse bunch of customers nestle together so beautifully, and that was essentially the point in the first place, somewhere all walks of life could feel safe.

"11 years a cafe, a venue, a creative arts hub, a familiar face, a friendly place and sometimes just a pub.

"We wish the new owners all the very best with their chosen path.

"This Saturday will combine our 11th birthday with a farewell party (final day trading as Rio is 1st April)."

The Facebook statement continues: "We'll be keeping the spirit of Rio alive with annual popups, festivals, balls and secret location gigs, details to follow.

"On behalf of Iain, Willie, Mark (Rio founders) and all of the staff and management over the years.....thank you!!!!!! Love, Paul"
